A dose of Hitchcock this week

My dad noticed first.
“You haven’t been writing for a long time?”
I was pleased he read at all. But I told him why. My life officially sucks. I dread everyday of work. Who can do anything at all in life, if it sucks. Sucks!!

Some good happened though. I watched two of Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpieces – Psycho and Rear Window – Also, IMDB top 20. In the latter, I was hard pressed to go to the rest room but waited with bated breath, so is he guilty at all? Will they marry? Will lonely hearts find love? How will it all end?

Two things unique in his style – he takes you on a personal journey through the lives of his characters – you will notice how the camera lingers on each expression, footstep, flick of the eye; his tales are a blend of many different tracks woven into one main plot. So, we see the life of each neighbour through Jefferies – not only that of the erring salesman but also the lonely heart woman, the morose musician, the flippant ballerina, Lisa, the perfect (oh so beautiful!) lover. Plenty of humour as well.

Conversation between Stella, the nurse and Jefferies. He is afraid to marry Lisa because she is too perfect. He was stupid, she told him. “Intelligence. Nothing has caused the human race so much trouble as intelligence” I can hear you now: "Get out of my life, you wonderful woman. You're too good for me."

Is that why so many of us are still just lonely hearts, waiting for the right person, right moment, right chance. We wait, losing what would have been good, wavering, wondering. Then we just despair and grab the next best thing. Eventually, we learn to make the best of it.

That's OK. It’s all part of evolution I say.
